With rapid urbanisation, Telangana State has experienced a rapid increase in the number of vehicles on the roads each year, particularly in Hyderabad..
The availability of good infrastructure and the city's emergence as a major IT hub in the country have enabled more vehicles to enter the roads, leading to congested roads and traffic snarls, eventually becoming an auto-centric city.
In recent years, Telangana has experienced a significant increase in vehicles (automobiles), with the total number rising from 70.73 lakh in 2014 to over 1.65 crore in 2023. Of which, motorcycles dominate the road space, numbering 1,21,74,353, followed by cars at 22,18,906.
According to data from the Joint Transport Commissioner (IT), Hyderabad is expected to see vehicle numbers reach 1,60,46,853 by 2033-34.
Already, Hyderabad frequently experiences traffic jams, especially during the monsoon, lasting for several hours, due to waterlogged roads, potholes, and flooding in many areas.
Citizens in Hyderabad have expressed disbelief over the staggering number of vehicles predicted. While some wonder about its impact on daily commuting and quality of life, others express concerns about environmental impacts and sustainability, especially air pollution.
In response to this shocking revelation, citizens have suggested various solutions to alleviate traffic congestion. Many propose infrastructure development, increased taxes, and improved public transport as potential remedies.
Support from the government is also inevitable to overcome this issue, as it needs to build infrastructure with proper planning, considering the rising number of vehicles every year.
